Tissue Mineral Analysis:

(Hair Analysis)

What is it For? What Does it Do?

Frequently Asked Questions:

Why should I have hair analysis done?

Hair analysis is a preventative health measure.  It can pinpoint mineral imbalances in your body and also alert your health care practitioner to the presence of toxic elements in your body.

What does the high or low level of certain minerals in my body have to do with my health?

There are thousands of biochemical reactions that ultimately control your metabolism, digestion and the regeneration of body tissues.  The vast majority of these reactions depends on certain trace minerals for their activity.  If these minute amounts of essential minerals are not there to fuel the processes then your ability to regenerate, metabolize or breakdown noxious substances is compromised.

What effect can these mineral imbalances have on my well-being?

Some symptoms of mineral imbalances include: headache, fatigue, nervousness, hypertension, depression, irritability, blood sugar imbalances, recurring infections and periodontal disease.

How do toxic elements get into my body?

Toxic metals like aluminum, arsenic, cadmium, mercury, lead and silver are found in products we use, consume and in the air that we breathe.  They accumulate in our bodies and interfere with the way vitamins and minerals are used.  This disturbs the way our metabolism functions and creates various degrees of un-wellness in us.

Who should have hair analysis done?

If you are concerned about preventing mineral imbalances or the accumulation of toxic metals in your body, then you should have a hair analysis.  It can be done for men, women and children as a means of prevention.

How often should hair analysis be done?

As a preventive health precaution, hair analysis should be done once a year.  For someone undergoing a program to detoxify their body from toxic metals or who is on a mineral supplement program to correct an imbalance, hair analysis done every three to six months provides a means of monitoring the program.

How much hair is needed for the analysis?

A small amount of hair is trimmed from the nape of the neck for use in the analysis.

What if I perm or color my hair?

Hair analysis is effective on newly permed or bleached hair.  However, certain colorants like “Grecian Formula” can alter the analysis results.

How is my hair analyzed?

Your sample is analyzed by a reputable laboratory using sophisticated laboratory equipment and procedures such as “emission spectrophotometry”. This is a method that can analyze for trace elements as low as a few parts per billion in hair tissue. Dr. Brosseau will receive a computerized interpretation of your hair analysis and will use it to determine if treatment is warranted

What do experts say about Hair Analysis?

While blood values inform the health professional what is in the blood, hair analysis provides a record of how the body stores and disposes of elements.”

Alexander Schauss, Author of “Diet, Crime&Delinquency

The choice of hair as a testing medium is based on the fact that the blood chemistries change kaleidoscopically from day to day while the hair values give a more stable view of the overall mineral nutrition”

Carleton Frederick, PHD Author of “Psycho-Nutrition

Hair analysis of minerals is used not only for diagnostic purposes but also to monitor the nutritional state of the patient until treatment benefits are achieved and the effects of the program have been stabilized”

Richard A. Kunin, M.D., Author of “Mega-Nutrition

The use of hair as an indicator tissue would seem to offer some advantages over other tissues in documenting:

  1. Delinquency of a required nutrient (e.g. zinc) owing to malabsorption of minerals by the body.

  2. Exposure to substances to which people are not normally exposed.

  3. Excessive exposure to potentially toxic  substances (e.g. lead)

“If the substance of interest is deposited in the hair, previous exposure can probably be determined at a much later date from hair then a urine, fecal or blood sample.”

Robert A. Yokel,Clinical Chemistry

Several investigators in Japan, Sweden, Canada and the U.S. have shown that concentrations of these toxic elements in the hair provide an accurate and relatively permanent record of exposure.  They also found a good correlation between concentrations in hair and concentrations in internal organs.

Hair tissue mineral analysis is responsive not only to trace mineral levels in the diet but to all other factors which influence their metabolism including stress, exercise, endocrine and gastro-intestinal function.

Hair tissue mineral analysis is a relatively inexpensive, non-invasive and biologically stable sampling technique that avoids the expense and discomfort of other tissue biopsies.
